As Nigeria marks her 65th Independence Anniversary, the Deputy Minority Leader of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Lere Oyewumi, PhD, congratulates Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. He describes the day as both a celebration of freedom and a sober reflection on the nation’s journey since 1960. He calls for patriotism, collective resolve, and purposeful leadership.
The Senator emphasizes that at 65, Nigeria must choose the path of unity, service, and visionary leadership to secure a brighter future. According to him, this anniversary must not be a time of mere rhetoric, but a resurgence of patriotism and purposeful action toward the Nigeria we know we can be.
Senator Oyewumi calls on Nigerians to play their part in nation-building, by being active in democratic processes, respecting the rule of law, and contributing to the growth of the economy and society. He equally urges leaders to rise above partisan interests, prioritize the welfare of citizens, and ensure transparency and accountability in governance.
In a special charge to the youth, the Senator describes them as the torchbearers of tomorrow, urging them to embrace education, innovation, and civic responsibility, noting that their energy and creativity are critical to Nigeria’s progress. He also reminds Nigerians in the diaspora of their role in promoting unity and contributing to national development.
Senator Oyewumi reassures Nigerians that the Senate will continue to champion laws that bring peace, safety, and prosperity to the people. He promises to work hand in hand with fellow lawmakers to translate the hopes of Nigerians into tangible progress.
