The push for comprehensive electoral reform gained momentum this week as the Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Lere Oyewumi, joined other Distinguished colleagues for a retreat in Lagos. The gathering, jointly organised by the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Electoral Matters, in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), brought together a wide array of stakeholders, including officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), legislators, civil society representatives, and governance experts.
The core objective of the convening was for the committees of both chambers of the National Assembly to meticulously review the proposed draft Electoral Bill 2025. The successful culmination of this crucial legislative reform process is considered essential for comprehensively revising the legal framework to address existing gaps and strengthen the integrity and transparency of future elections. This dedicated effort is aimed at solidifying the foundation for a more robust and effective electoral system in Nigeria.
In his remarks, Senator Oyewumi strongly advocated for the necessity of credible elections and good governance. He emphasized that the discussions and resolutions reached at the Retreat would be instrumental in shaping future policies and legislative actions specifically designed to improve Nigeria’s electoral system.
