The Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Lere Oyewumi joined his distinguished colleagues from the Senate and House of Representatives, as the National Assembly commenced critical deliberations on the comprehensive review of the 1999 Constitution, a process which includes considering proposals for the creation of 55 new states and 278 additional local government areas (LGAs) across the Federation.
The significant scope of the review was highlighted by the Deputy Senate President and Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Senator Barau Jibrin, at the opening of a two-day joint retreat for the constitutional review committees held in Lagos. Senator Barau disclosed that the legislature has received an unprecedented number of requests from stakeholders nationwide, detailing: 69 general amendment bills, 55 state creation requests, 278 LGA creation requests and 2 boundary adjustment proposals.
Senator Oyewumi asserted that constitutional review transcends a mere legislative routine, representing a critical opportunity to rectify protracted structural imbalances that have impeded Nigeria's development. He stressed that the current review process must accurately reflect the collective aspirations of Nigerians and comprehensively address persistent national issues.
