RE: OSUN APC'S FALSE, MALICIOUS AND RECKLESS ALLEGATIONS AGAINST SENATOR AKOGUN LERE OYEWUMI
• Calls for Professional Conduct by Security Agencies and Urgent Redeployment of CP Ibrahim Gotan
The attention of the Media Unit of the Office of the Senate Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Akogun Kamorudeen Lere Oyewumi, has been drawn to a statement issued by the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council containing baseless, malicious and politically motivated allegations against the distinguished Senator.
For the record, Senator Akogun Lere Oyewumi has never been invited, questioned or investigated by the Nigeria Police Force in connection with the killing of any individual because he has never been associated with criminal activities. Attempts to drag his name into criminal matters through media propaganda cannot alter this indisputable fact.
On the day the late Hon. Remi Abass tragically lost his life, Senator Oyewumi was attending plenary proceedings at the National Assembly in Abuja. This is a matter of public record and can easily be verified. It is therefore irresponsible and mischievous for anyone to seek to associate him with the unfortunate incident.
Senator Oyewumi's political trajectory has been built on hard work, consistency and a genuine commitment to public service. He has won elections without violence and, even after losing the 2019 senatorial election, accepted the verdict of the people without resorting to litigation. His conviction has always remained that no political ambition is worth the blood of any human being.
It is deeply disturbing and unfortunate that the Osun APC and its governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, appear more interested in diverting attention from the tragic killing of 14-year-old Ezekiel Olopade in Ilobu than in supporting efforts to uncover the truth and ensure justice for the deceased.
Every loss of innocent life deserves unequivocal condemnation. If some political actors cannot genuinely sympathize with grieving families, the least expected of them is to allow others to mourn in peace instead of offering narratives that appear designed to excuse or rationalize violence.
The growing pattern of political intolerance, intimidation and violence should concern every well-meaning citizen. Political parties should focus on presenting their programmes and seeking the mandate of the people through democratic means rather than encouraging actions capable of undermining peace, security and the sanctity of human life.
Allegations regarding the use of branded vehicles during violent incidents and the identities of those involved have been raised by members of the public. Such allegations deserve thorough, impartial and professional investigation by the appropriate security agencies. No individual or political party should seek to pre-empt or obstruct the course of justice.
Given widespread public concerns over the handling of sensitive cases in Osun State, the Inspector-General of Police should, as a matter of urgent public importance, consider the redeployment of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, in order to restore public confidence and guarantee impartial investigations.
The Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies must discharge their constitutional responsibilities professionally and without bias, ensuring that all acts of violence and criminality are thoroughly investigated and that those found culpable are brought to justice, irrespective of political affiliation.
Furthermore, it is important to remind the public that several members and supporters of the PDP in Ikire have lost their lives in violent circumstances over the years, with families and communities still grieving and demanding justice.
Among those killed were Aderemi Abideen Abiodun, popularly known as Ojubintin; Aderonbi Abass; Kolade Eluyera; Toheeb Bakare, popularly known as Yaba; and Adesile Seebu.
In 2022/2023, Hon. Aderemi Abideen Abiodun (Ojubintin) was murdered in his residence at Ori-Eru, Ikire, in circumstances that shocked the entire community. On February 17, 2025, Toheeb Bakare, popularly known as Yaba, was shot dead at his car wash. Subsequently, on October 11, 2025, Hon. Adesile Seebu and Aderonbi Abass lost their lives in another violent attack.
More recently, on May 8, 2026, Kolade Eluyera, son of Mrs. Eluyera, the Irewole Accord Women Leader, was reportedly killed behind his mother's residence. Reports from the same period also alleged an attempted abduction of Hon. Lateef Sodiq, popularly known as AKARA, who narrowly escaped his captors and sustained injuries in the process.
These incidents have left painful scars on families and the people of Ikire. They underscore the urgent need for thorough and impartial investigations into all cases of politically related violence, irrespective of the identities or affiliations of those involved.
It is therefore disturbing that some individuals now seek to occupy the moral high ground while refusing to acknowledge the pain and losses suffered by others. Justice cannot be selective, and sympathy should not be determined by political affiliation.
Senator Akogun Lere Oyewumi remains committed to peace, justice and democratic values. He believes strongly that violence has no place in a civilized society and that all those found culpable of criminal acts, regardless of status or political affiliation, should be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
No amount of blackmail, propaganda or desperate attempts at revisionism can diminish Senator Oyewumi's reputation as a peace-loving leader and a servant of the people.
