In a startling revelation, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, has accused individuals of forging the signature of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari to withdraw $6.2 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on February 8, 2023. Mustapha, testifying in the trial of former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, stated that his own signature was also forged in the process, disclaiming any knowledge or involvement in the withdrawal allegedly meant for payment to foreign election observers.
Mustapha emphasized that it was neither the federal government's nor the SGF's responsibility to request funds from the CBN for the payment of foreign election observers. He clarified that this duty falls solely under the jurisdiction of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
During the trial, an official of the CBN, Michael Onyeka Ogbu, disclosed that the substantial amount was disbursed in cash to an official from the office of the SGF, identified as Jibril Abubakar. Ogbu further stated that these transactions received approvals from President Buhari and CBN governor Godwin Emefiele following a purported request by the SGF.
The prosecution has leveled accusations against Emefiele, alleging his involvement in orchestrating the controversial withdrawal. This testimony raises serious questions about the integrity of the process and the accountability of those entrusted with managing public funds.
